Construction is underway at Pioneer Park as Salt Lake City implements improvements following a series of funding approvals by the City Council. The project, which began in March 2026, includes various upgrades to recreational facilities and park infrastructure.
The north half of the park is currently closed to the public during construction. Early work involves excavation and the installation of underground components such as pipe, footings for poles and structures, and concrete paths and promenades.
The project will maintain the multi-use field added in 2019 while introducing new community amenities. Planned additions include basketball and pickleball courts, a new all-ages playground, and an enhanced dog park.
Infrastructure upgrades consist of new restrooms, a ranger station, an iconic pavilion, and event power to support community events. The design also incorporates nature-focused elements such as a shaded lawn, tree groves, and native plantings.
To ensure environmental sustainability, Salt Lake City is pursuing SITES certification for the park. This certification process aims to reduce water demand, manage stormwater runoff, enhance biodiversity, and improve air quality and human health.
The design process involved collaboration with several entities. The team worked with Salt Lake City’s Urban Forestry team to develop a planting strategy that includes over 80 new trees while protecting existing healthy trees. Additionally, the design team met with the Downtown Alliance and special events groups to ensure site compatibility for events.
A lighting plan featuring energy-efficient LED fixtures was developed to increase security and wayfinding while minimizing light trespass into surrounding residential areas. The project also included youth engagement at the Gateway Children’s Museum to gather input on playground equipment.
Funding for the improvements has been provided through various allocations, including $3.44 million in impact fee funding approved in 2019, $10 million from a Sales Tax Bond approved in 2022, and an additional $4.96 million approved in 2024.
While construction continues, the Downtown Farmers Market will remain operational every Saturday from June 6 through October 24, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., with vendors reconfigured to accommodate the work.
