A $1.1 billion renewable energy project in Emery County is prepared to begin operations next week, featuring a massive solar photovoltaic facility integrated with a large-scale battery energy storage system.

The Green River Energy Center consists of a 400 MWac solar PV facility paired with a 400 MW battery energy storage system (BESS), according to rPlus Energies. The project, which began construction in the third quarter of 2024, utilizes over 2,500 acres of previously undeveloped high desert land.
Construction methods and capacity details
Construction for the facility was managed by Sundt Construction using an engineer-procure-construct delivery method. While rPlus Energies identifies the project size at 400 MWac, Sundt's project records from August 2025 listed the scope as a 540 MWdc photovoltaic plant with 1600 MWh of battery capacity.
Technical challenges during construction
The construction phase involved significant technical challenges, including unexpectedly rocky ground conditions that required remediation for over 13,000 piles in the solar field and all piles within the battery storage yard, Sundt reported. The project scope included the installation of approximately 130,000 piles and nearly 1,000,000 photovoltaic modules.
