Salt Lake City's Clean Air SLC landscaping equipment exchange program is now open to help residents purchase electric landscaping tools. Applications for the program opened at noon on Wednesday, April 15, and will stay open until all program funds have been distributed.
Participants can apply for money toward various electric items, including electric lawnmowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, edgers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and leaf vacuums.
Mayor Erin Mendenhall stated that helping clear the air in homes and neighborhoods is of paramount importance. She noted that the community has swapped out over 2,000 units since 2024 and that residents can continue to earn vouchers for electric lawnmowers and handheld tools to reduce pollution.
Voucher amounts depend on whether a participant recycles gas-powered equipment or makes an electric purchase only. Recycling a mower provides a $295 voucher, while recycling a smaller handheld tool earns a $155 voucher. For those not recycling gas-powered equipment, vouchers include $145 for a mower or $75 for a handheld tool.
The program is partnering with specific retail locations where residents can take gas-powered equipment to be recycled in exchange for coupon codes. Participating locations include City Ace Hardware at 612 E. 400 South and 477 N. 300 West, as well as the Home Depot at 328 W. 2100 South.
Electric options are described as much cleaner than gas-powered alternatives, assisting in reducing carbon and criteria pollution within the airshed.
Since starting in Spring 2024, the Clean Air SLC program has retired 2,105 units of gas-powered equipment. This effort is estimated to remove 6,800 pounds of pollution annually, which is equivalent to taking 1,124 cars off the road.
Clean Air SLC is an initiative designed to distribute equipment and information to help Salt Lake City residents improve air quality in their homes and communities.
