A severe thunderstorm warning for north central Utah County has been cancelled as storms moved out of the area, according to the National Weather Service Salt Lake City. Meanwhile, a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for portions of northern Utah, southeast Idaho, and extreme southwest Wyoming through Sunday evening, according to the Storm Prediction Center.
Utah County Warning Cancelled
The National Weather Service Salt Lake City announced on Friday, August 28, at 5:38 PM MDT that the severe thunderstorm warning for north central Utah County was cancelled because the storms had moved out of the warned area.
Prior to the cancellation, the National Weather Service reported that severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Samak to 10 miles northwest of Tabiona. The storm line was moving northeast at 45 mph.
Radar indicated hazards included wind gusts of up to 60 mph and hail as large as 0.75 inches in diameter. The National Weather Service advised residents to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building for protection. The specific locations impacted by the storm line included Kamas, Oakley, Francis, Samak, Mirror Lake, Trial Lake, Moon Lake, Marion, Hanna, and Woodland.
Travelers were warned that the storm affected Utah Route 35 between mile markers 0 and 41, as well as the Mirror Lake Highway between mile markers 0 and 43.
Regional Storm Watch Issued
While the Utah County warning has ended, the Storm Prediction Center issued a severe thunderstorm watch for a broad area spanning several states. The watch is in effect from 3:30 PM MDT until 10:00 PM MDT on Sunday, August 24, 2026.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers portions of southeast Idaho, northern Utah, and extreme southwest Wyoming. The primary threats identified by the center include scattered damaging winds with isolated significant gusts potentially reaching 75 mph, as well as isolated large hail events with diameters up to 1.5 inches.
The Storm Prediction Center noted that scattered thunderstorms are expected through late evening as a mix of cells and clusters capable of producing severe outflow gusts of 60-75 mph and isolated large hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
Impacted Counties and Regions
The area under the severe thunderstorm watch includes a variety of counties across three states. In Utah, the watch includes Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Morgan, Rich, Salt Lake, Summit, Tooele, Utah, Wasatch, and Weber counties.
In Idaho, the watch includes Bannock, Bear Lake, Bingham, Bonneville, Caribou, Cassia, Franklin, Oneida, and Power counties. The watch also extends into extreme southwest Wyoming, specifically including Uinta County.
The Storm Prediction Center stated that the watch area is approximately along and 70 statute miles east and west of a line stretching from 10 miles east northeast of Pocatello, Idaho, to 50 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah.
Current Forecast Status
As of Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 5:14:05 UTC, the National Weather Service reported that no convective watches are currently valid.
Meteorologists advise that a severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. Residents in these areas should remain on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible warnings. The National Weather Service also noted that severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce tornadoes.
