Sheldon Stewart was elected to serve as a member of the Salt Lake County Council representing District 5. Following his election on November 8, he was sworn into the position on January 3. His move to the county level required him to resign from his seat on the Riverton City Council, a position he held for nearly three terms. Stewart previously represented District 1 on the council for 11 years, a district that encompasses the far west side of Riverton, according to a message from Mayor Trent Staggs.

In a message from March 15, 2024, Stewart identified several key areas of focus for his role at the county level. One primary concern involves how southwest cities continue to subsidize the services utilized in other areas of the county. Specifically, Stewart noted that the cost per resident for UTA is ever increasing while access to services are reduced.
Another regional service subject to discussion is the Salt Lake County Library. Stewart stated that the utilization of physical services are reduced while costs are disproportionately assigned to Riverton with additional tax increases looming. Additionally, the Unified Police Department remains a point of focus. Stewart noted that residents continue to pay a subsidy through county taxes that is ultimately offsetting costs for members of the Unified Police Department.
As the region grows, the council must manage the balance between community demands and existing limitations. The leadership in the southwest seeks to maintain the region by advocating for the interests of cities like Riverton. This advocacy includes managing the infrastructure and management plans that address the physical and digital needs of the community, such as water, roads, and broadband access.
