A 42-year-old man was sentenced to a prison term of five to 15 years after pleading guilty to automobile homicide. Travis Patrick McIntyre received the indeterminate sentence following the death of 26-year-old Matthew Daines, who died after protecting his pregnant wife during a DUI crash in Springville.
The judge credited McIntyre with 294 days already served in jail.
The incident occurred on September 3, 2025, while Daines and his wife were walking on a sidewalk near 400 South and 40 East. According to prosecutors, McIntyre was driving under the influence when he left the roadway and crossed onto the sidewalk, striking the couple.
Investigators stated that Daines saw the truck approaching and pushed his wife to safety before being hit. While Daines died from his injuries, his wife survived the crash and has since given birth to the couple's child.
Police reported that McIntyre's blood alcohol content was 0.307, which is more than three times Utah's legal limit of 0.05.
As part of a plea agreement, McIntyre pleaded guilty on May 5. In exchange for the automobile homicide plea, prosecutors dismissed charges including drug possession, driving on a denied license, a traffic infraction, and negligently operating a vehicle resulting in injury.
The case gained significant attention across Utah due to the nature of Daines' actions. A Superman cape was placed on a memorial near the crash site to symbolize his sacrifice.
Witness Landon Owens, who was working nearby during the collision, described rushing outside with coworkers to provide aid using towels and water.
Springville police stated that Daines' death highlights the devastating results of impaired driving. Officers noted an increase in DUI-related incidents and encouraged the public to report suspected impaired drivers.
