The City Attorney and Recorder’s Office conducted an investigation into the principal place of residence for Eva Lopez Chavez following an inquiry from a District Four resident. The investigation determined that Chavez is ineligible to continue serving as the District Four Salt Lake City Council Member.
The Salt Lake City Council stated that it respects the legal process followed in making this determination. Due to clear State Code, the vacancy is effective immediately.
The city is currently conducting annual budget briefings, but officials noted the importance of ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining representation for residents of District Four. The process to fill the vacant seat is expected to take 30 days.
More information regarding the vacancy will be released as soon as possible. In the interim, District Four residents are encouraged to continue sharing input and questions through normal channels for consideration by the Council.
