The National Park Service is asking for public help to locate Patrick J. Trier, a 71-year-old white male. According to a news release from the park, Trier was last seen in Salina, Utah, on Sunday, August 16.
Trier may have been camping in Goblin Valley State Park or near Moab, Utah, before arriving at the Horseshoe Canyon trailhead of Canyonlands National Park on August 17. He is described as approximately six feet tall with a medium build, long brown hair, and a mustache. He has an atrophied right arm and was likely wearing jeans, a blue hat, and carrying a small black and gray backpack.
Park rangers were notified of an overdue party on Saturday, August 22. NPS law enforcement located Trier's vehicle, a maroon 2004 Toyota RAV4, at the Horseshoe trailhead on Sunday, August 23.
Aerial and ground searches are being conducted by the NPS, Bureau of Land Management, and Wayne County Search and Rescue. Search efforts are impacted by rough terrain and daytime temperatures in the high 90s. The Horseshoe Canyon hike is considered strenuous.
The NPS is requesting that anyone who may have seen Trier at Horseshoe Canyon or in the days leading up to his trip contact the NPS Tip Line at 888-653-0009 or online at go.nps.gov/SubmitATip.
