SALT LAKE CITY — Making a change in your lifestyle can be a lot easier than you think.

The concept of 1% change

Fitness expert Julie Labrum said that mindset can actually stop people from starting a new lifestyle choice. She calls it the power of 1%.

The power of 1% can help you feel healthier, stronger, and more energized. Labrum said success comes from learning how to move forward, even when it seems impossible.

“What that means, really, is doing small, incremental, intentional things that compound, or make changes for us,” Labrum said.

Labrum also said over time, doing small actions and making a 1% will add up. It's not about doing things perfectly, it's about consistency.

She said the key to transformation is having tiny improvements in the way you talk to yourself, showing up for stress management and showing up when it matters. There will never be an ideal situation to make yourself better, and if you wait, you get stuck.

Labrum shared five tips to help you have a healthier lifestyle, with the power of 1%.

The key is being intentional

“I like to say do things on purpose and with purpose because our days get busy,” Labrum said. “We kind of get on overload or autopilot, and we kind of forget to look at these opportunities to make changes, real changes that help our health and our minds.”

She said when you look for opportunities, there is intentionality. Doing small tasks like drinking more water or working on a project will add up over time.

Say yes to small improvements

Embrace small, healthy improvements

Labrum said to say yes to small tasks or improvements. When you start with small, healthy habits, it removes old habits.

Look for opportunities to act

“The key is getting out of your comfort zone and that's where we rewire our brain and that's where we kind of rebuild our confidence,” she said.

If you feel stuck, getting out of your comfort zone gives you a chance to improve your skills.

Make the choice to just move

Take simple physical steps

Labrum said to take small steps to start new goals. Wake up 15 minutes early to go for a walk to get some fresh air, or delay your caffeine intake in the morning.

Give yourself grace

She added to surround yourself with people who will encourage and support you.

Labrum added when you find opportunities to act, you will see growth.

“Your brain and your body connect with challenges, and you just become a little younger,” she said.
