Archaeologists with the Utah State Historic Preservation Office are conducting a second season of excavation at a 19th-century silver mining boomtown located beneath the slopes of Alta Ski Resort. The dig site aims to uncover personal artifacts and stories from the historic settlement.
The office has also partnered with the U.S. Forest Service and community leaders to restore a monument dedicated to Masashi Goto, an aviator who crashed in Utah in 1929 during a round-the-world flight. The restoration includes the installation of new interpretive signs.
In Logan, the Logan Downtown Alliance has earned both State and National Main Street Accreditation. This designation serves as a benchmark for community revitalization and preservation-based economic growth in Utah.
The Utah State Historic Preservation Office works to ensure the integrity of the state's historical and archaeological resources while helping agencies comply with preservation laws. The office also manages the Utah Cultural Site Stewardship program to protect archaeological sites and supports the Utah Main Street Program to revitalize community centers.
