The Utah Mammoth opened their third season in Salt Lake City with a commanding 6-0 shutout victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Delta Center. Dylan Guenther provided the offensive spark with two power-play goals, while goaltender Karel Vejmelka recorded the first shutout at home in franchise history.
Guenther, who has scored in each of the Mammoth's first three season openers, set the tone early in the first period. At 16:41 of the opening frame, he took a pass from Logan Cooley and snapped a shot from the top of the right face-off circle to give Utah a 1-0 lead on the power play. He later added a second power-play goal at 15:28 of the second period, redirecting a pass from Clayton Keller to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Mammoth offense showed significant depth, with 14 different skaters recording at least one point, setting a franchise record. Michael Carcone scored 40 seconds after Guenther's first goal, converting a pass from Kevin Stenlund to make it 2-0. Nick Schmaltz added a goal at 9:47 of the second period by putting a rebound over the pad of Chicago goaltender Arvid Soderblom. Anders Lee, making his debut for the Mammoth after signing a three-year, $16.2 million contract on July 1, extended the lead to 4-0 with a tip in the slot. Daniil But closed the scoring at 12:50 of the third period with a deflection off a Carcone shot.
Coach Andre Tourigny praised the team's performance, noting that Vejmelka was "confident out there" and "solid" when required to make big saves. Tourigny also highlighted the team's ability to create scoring opportunities through traffic and rebounds. While the victory marks a strong start for the franchise, Guenther noted the need to maintain momentum as the team begins a five-game road trip starting Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The loss leaves the Chicago Blackhawks at 0-2 for the season, following a 5-2 defeat against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashil remarked that his team struggled with decision-making speed in the fast-paced game. Chicago defenseman Ian Cole, who played for Utah during the previous two seasons, noted that the team must use the next 48 hours to fix issues before their next game against the Buffalo Sabres.
The Mammoth are entering the season with high expectations following their first Stanley Cup Playoff appearance last year. General manager Bill Armstrong indicated the team is ready to take the next step in their development. The team also recently completed Phase 2 of renovations at the Delta Center, which included improved sightlines and refreshed seating to enhance the fan experience for the third season in Salt Lake City.
The Mammoth's roster underwent significant changes during the offseason to bolster their playoff push. In addition to the signing of Lee, the team added Vincent Trocheck and Andrew Peeke, both of whom contributed to the score sheet during the season opener. Meanwhile, the team assigned top prospects Tij Iginla and Caleb Desnoyers to Tucson to continue their development.
The Mammoth's success in the opener highlights a roster built on a youthful core supplemented by veteran talent. As the team prepares for a long season, the focus remains on consistency across all 84 games.
