The Salt Lake City Police Department released safety guidelines regarding the storage and handling of firearms. The department noted that securing firearms should be a priority even for households without children to decrease the chances of theft.
Vehicle theft statistics
According to the SLCPD, approximately three firearms are investigated each month as being stolen from vehicles. Most of these cases involved firearms that were left unsecured. The department stated that proper storage, particularly in vehicles, protects lives and reduces theft.
Recommended storage methods
To prevent crime, officials recommended using keyed locks, combination locks, lock boxes, or firearm safes. They also suggested using safety devices like trigger or cable locks and keeping ammunition in a separate, securely locked container. It was noted that keys should be kept out of reach of children and hidden from others.
Importance of serial numbers
The SLCPD highlighted the necessity of documenting serial numbers. If a firearm is stolen without a recorded serial number, law enforcement cannot enter it into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. This lack of information impedes the ability to track or recover weapons and can allow guns to circulate on the street or be used in crimes.
Fundamental firearm safety rules
Basic safety rules provided included treating all firearms as if they were loaded, keeping fingers off the trigger until ready to fire, never pointing a firearm at anything one is not willing to shoot, and knowing the target and environment before firing.
Child safety and education
Regarding child safety, the department advised that hiding a gun is insufficient and that guns must be locked away. Parents were encouraged to teach children four specific steps if they encounter a gun: Stop, Don't Touch, Leave the Area, and Tell an Adult.
The department suggested talking openly with children about gun safety once they show interest and noted that repetition helps children remember standard procedures.
