A man who was reportedly armed with a large stick and threatening to shoot was fatally shot Sunday morning at a West Valley City hotel complex, according to a West Valley City Police Department statement published Oct. 25, 2026.
Officers were dispatched to the Towneplace Suites at 5473 W. Highmarket Dr. at approximately 8:45 a.m. Hotel employees discovered a man inside an outbuilding used for storage and reported that the man was armed with a large stick and was threatening to shoot them.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the man. An officer identified the man as being armed with a large metal rod. Following the deployment of pepper spray by an officer, shots were fired. Although officers immediately began lifesaving efforts, the suspect was ultimately pronounced deceased. Witnesses at the scene initially described the suspect as running at the officer while holding large metal objects in both hands.
The West Jordan Police Department’s protocol team is conducting a full investigation into the incident. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure during an officer-involved critical incident.
