Representative Trevor Lee resigned from the Utah Legislature on Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, after being charged with multiple felonies, including mortgage fraud and forgery. The Utah House of Representatives confirmed that Lee notified Speaker Mike Schultz of his resignation, which became effective immediately.
Felony Charges Detailed
The resignation follows charges brought by the Utah Attorney General's Office involving allegations of public corruption. According to charging documents, Lee allegedly devised a scheme to obtain a $1,000,000 home loan through false pretenses. This scheme involved submitting fraudulent documentation to Kind Lending during the mortgage process.
Prosecutors allege that Lee submitted a forged Enevive employment contract and a loan application that overstated his income from that company. Additionally, the documents state Lee submitted a Blue Logic offer letter that he knew misrepresented his employment status.
Investigation Into Corruption
The specific charges filed against Lee include second-degree felony communications fraud, second-degree felony mortgage fraud, third-degree felony forgery, and third-degree felony possession of a forgery writing device, according to KUTV reporting.
A special agent with the Utah Attorney General's Office stated the agent was assigned to the case regarding allegations of public corruption several months ago. This investigation involved reviewing two videos and screenshots of conversations with Lee concerning a previous incident involving check fraud.
Lee Resignation Statement
In a statement regarding his departure from the legislature, Lee cited personal reasons for his resignation. "Due to personal circumstances that require my attention, I no longer feel I can give my constituents the time, attention, and service they deserve," Lee said.
Lee, who has represented House District 16 in Davis County since January 2023, expressed gratitude for his time in office. He stated, "I will always be grateful for the people I have met, the relationships I have built, and the opportunity I have had to serve the people of Utah."
Filling the Vacancy
The vacancy in House District 16 will be addressed through a special election. The Davis County Republican Party announced it will hold this election to fill the seat for the remainder of the term.
Lee's resignation comes amid accusations from two businessmen who accused the Utah lawmaker of past check fraud and abuse of power. One business owner accused the lawmaker of leveraging political connections to secure contracts.
Legal Outlook
The resignation was announced hours after the Utah Attorney General's Office filed the criminal charges, as reported by Fox13 News. The legal proceedings regarding the fraud and forgery charges are expected to move forward following the formal filing on Monday, Sept. 28, 2026.
