Lehi residents can begin burning yard debris on Tuesday, Sept. 15, according to a September 14 report. The fall open burn season is scheduled to run through Friday, Oct. 30, but requires residents to obtain a $25 annual permit through the city's online application process before any burning begins.
The permits are restricted to yard debris clean-up, covering items such as clippings, bushes, plants, prunings, and dry grasses. Prohibited materials include large branches, tree stumps, tires, construction materials, plastics, and household trash.
Before lighting a fire, residents must call the Utah County Burn Line at 801-851-2876 to confirm it is a green burn day. Additionally, residents must have their city application on hand and ensure fires are attended at all times with a means of extinguishment. All fires must be fully extinguished before dark.
Safety regulations require fires to be kept at least 50 feet away from any building, structure, or combustible material. Smaller piles, defined as being under 3 feet in diameter and under 2 feet high, require a minimum clearance of 25 feet. Permits are only valid for the specific address listed on the application and cannot be transferred to other people or properties.
Violating burn rules or burning without a permit is a class B misdemeanor under Lehi City Ordinance 8.12.080. Penalties may include a fine of up to $299, up to six months in the Utah County jail, or both. For questions, residents can contact the Lehi Fire Department at 385-201-1081.
