I-15 drivers will now experience new pavement in each direction
SALT LAKE CITY (Sept. 18, 2026) — The Utah Department of Transportation will shift southbound Interstate 15 drivers onto 1.5 miles of new pavement in Davis County beginning tomorrow night.
Starting Saturday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m., crews will begin closing lanes to shift southbound I-15 traffic onto the new pavement between 5600 South in Roy and 650 North in Clearfield. The shift is expected to be fully implemented by Sunday, Sept. 20 at 10 a.m.
Once complete, I-15 drivers will be traveling on new pavement in both directions through the project area. Northbound I-15 traffic was moved onto new pavement in June.
“If you drive this section of I-15 regularly, the road looks very different than it did even a few months ago,” UDOT Region One Director Nathan Peterson said. “Moving southbound traffic onto the new pavement is another big piece of that positive change and will provide relief to commuters and local drivers making their daily trips.”
The next major project milestone is expected to occur in January, when a new bridge at 1800 North and 500 West will be opened. A previous crossing in this area at the railroad tracks required drivers to stop and wait, but this crossing goes over the railroad tracks, allowing drivers to keep moving without delay.
Drivers can continue to expect traffic shifts and side street closures along 1800 North and construction moves forward. A full weekend closure of the southbound I-15 off-ramp to 650 North (Exit 335) in Clearfield is also planned for late September.
The 1800 North Improved project is widening I-15, building a new interchange on I-15 in Sunset, widening 1800 North, adding a new bridge over the railroad, building a multi-use trail and pedestrian bridge and making room for a future Hill Air Force Base entrance gate. The project is approximately 50% done and expected to finish in the fall of 2027.
