The Salt Lake City Council hosted an annual offsite meeting at the Sorenson Unity Center on Sept. 17, 2024, to engage Westside residents and stakeholders through direct community participation and public comment.
Community Engagement Efforts
The meeting, which took place at the Sorenson Unity Center, served as part of a broader effort by city officials to increase accessibility and transparency by bringing City Hall directly to Westside neighborhoods. Residents gathered at the community center to share thoughts, concerns, and ideas with Council Members in what officials described as a welcoming environment.
Prioritizing Accessibility
Council Chair Victoria Petro stated that the offsite meetings are a way for the city to prioritize accessibility while connecting with Westside neighbors. Petro noted that these sessions allow residents to share input and provide opportunities for constituents to get involved in local governance.
Great Salt Lake Protection
During the proceedings, the Council approved a resolution that reaffirms the City's commitment to supporting the health of the Great Salt Lake. The Council's decision acknowledged the various pressing threats facing the lake, including water diversions, climate change, and the exposure of toxic dust.
Strategic Planning and Infrastructure
In line with its environmental goals, the Council noted its support for the implementation of the Great Salt Lake Strategic Plan. The meeting also addressed other legislative and infrastructure items, such as updates regarding the construction of Glendale Regional Park and the Emerald Ribbon Action Plan.
Connectivity and Water Management
The Council also reviewed efforts related to maintaining water levels in the Great Salt Lake. Additionally, discussions included the Reconnecting Communities Grant, which was awarded to the City in 2022 to address transportation connectivity between the east and west sides of the city.
Meeting Highlights
The event featured community-focused elements, including dinner provided by Rancho Market and entertainment by the Indian cultural dance group ChichraKaavya Dance. The meeting's opening ceremony was led by the community well-being nonprofit Jayhawks House Collaborative (JHC), with West High School junior and JHC mentee Kayuh leading the pledge of allegiance.

The Salt Lake City Council, the seven-member legislative branch for Utah's capital, holds regular meetings most Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake City & County Building or virtually through Zoom.
