ATLANTA — Ted Turner, the cable news pioneer, philanthropist, and founder of CNN, has died at the age of 87.
A statement released by Turner Enterprises indicated that Turner passed away peacefully in the presence of his family.
Turner was recognized for founding CNN as well as several other networks, including TNT, TCM, and Cartoon Network. His philanthropic efforts included donating over a billion dollars, preserving more than two million acres of land, and working to save endangered and imperiled species.
Beyond his media ventures, the announcement noted his involvement with Ted’s Montana Grill restaurants, where he served bison. Turner was described as a man known for his humor, warmth, and loyalty, often insisting that people call him Ted rather than Mr. Turner.
Turner had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in 2018.
As the family grieves the loss of their patriarch, they have requested privacy. While a private family service is planned, a public memorial service will be held at a later date.
