Orem Zoning Amendment Proposal
The Orem City Council has scheduled a public hearing for May 26, 2026, to consider amendments to the city code regarding the powers and duties of the Planning Commission. According to a notice from the City of Orem, the council will also consider a zoning map amendment for a property at 355 West University Parkway. The proposal seeks to change approximately 5.93 acres from R8 single-family residential to C-2 commercial, accompanied by a development agreement that would limit certain uses.
Monroe Liquor Agency Inquiry
In Monroe, the Planning Commission voted unanimously on April 21, 2026, to schedule a public hearing for May 19, 2026, regarding a request to allow a state liquor package agency. The commission reviewed a presentation from Green Valley Gas owners Stephanie Elliott and Lori Eyre, who proposed establishing a 750-square-foot agency within their existing gas station. During the meeting, Chair Candice Barney noted she had consulted with Sevier County Sheriff Curtis, who stated that data does not show a correlation between liquor store proximity and increased DUI rates.
The Monroe commission discussed the impact of recent closures of four area liquor stores, which has forced residents to travel to Salina for purchases. While commissioners considered whether a commercial-residential zone was appropriate for the agency, City Treasurer Jacee Barney noted that any land use ordinance amendment requires a public hearing. The commission also held a public hearing during the same meeting to receive comments regarding the Monroe City Master Transportation Plan.
Riverton Fraudulent Invoice Alert
Separately, Riverton City has issued an alert regarding fraudulent invoices targeting land use applicants. The city reported that scammers are using the official Riverton logo and falsely claiming to be from the Riverton Planning Commission to solicit wire transfers or credit card information. Riverton City officials emphasized that the Planning Commission does not issue invoices on behalf of the city and advised applicants to verify any communications by contacting city staff directly.
