These classes are taught by nurses specializing in joint replacement surgery and aim to provide important concepts and tips to assist with a smooth surgery and recovery process.

The curriculum for these classes focuses on several key areas of surgical preparation and post-operative care. Topics include preparing for surgery, what to expect during a hospital stay, and details regarding the surgery itself.
Additionally, the sessions cover preventing complications, managing pain, physical therapy expectations, and planning for a safe recovery at home. Intermountain Health strongly encourages patients scheduled for joint replacement surgery to attend these classes alongside the caregiver who will be assisting them at home following their procedure.

For online learners, live group classes are available via Microsoft Teams. For example, a shoulder replacement class is scheduled for June 30, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. for patients at St. George Regional Hospital.
In-person sessions are held in classrooms located at the hospital where the surgery is planned. An in-person shoulder replacement class will be held at the Narrows Classroom, located at 1380 E Medical Center Drive in St. George, on June 30, 2026.
Other upcoming sessions include online classes for patients of Alta View Hospital, LDS Hospital, and American Fork Hospital, as well as an in-person session at Spanish Fork Hospital on June 30, 2026.
Registration and cancellation details
Patients should register for a class session at the specific hospital where their surgery is scheduled. For those needing to reschedule or cancel, instructions are provided via the hospital joint coordinator nurse listed in the registration confirmation email.
Spanish language class availability
Classes are also offered in Spanish (Clase sobre el reemplazo articular) for patients receiving knee, hip, or shoulder replacements.
