Old Spanish National Historic Trail to be celebrated with historic
marker unveiling at Crosby Family Confluence Park, June 30
Seven silhouettes also mark trail explorers created nearly 200 years ago
ST. GEORGE — The City of St. George, in partnership with the Old Spanish Trail Association, will
commemorate the enduring legacy of the explorers who forged the Old Spanish National
Historic Trail nearly 200 years ago during a special event on June 30 at 8 a.m. at Crosby Family
Confluence Park (2099 S. Convention Center Drive).
A historical marker unveiling will take place adjacent to the foot bridge located on the Mayor’s
Loop Trail. All are invited to this community event, which will also showcase the recent
installation of seven silhouettes depicting explorers.
Antonio Armijo was a Spanish-Mexican explorer and merchant who in 1829 and 1830 led an
expedition to find a trade route between New Mexico and Los Angeles. The party of 60 men,
including Armijo and a pack of 100 mules, left Abiquiu, New Mexico on November 7, 1829. They
passed through Washington County between December 16 and 24, 1829.
Following a short program, members from the Association will be on hand to discuss the
historical significance and relevance to St. George. Breakfast refreshments will be served while
supplies last.
