Derek Bonney, a Skyridge High School teacher and assistant cross-country coach, traveled with his wife, Amber, and their young son, Carl, to Boston in mid-April to run the Boston Marathon. However, their trip took an unexpected turn when Amber gave birth to their second son, James, at just 30 weeks and 4 days of gestation, two days before the marathon.
James, weighing 3 lbs. 14 oz. and measuring 15 inches long, is doing well despite being in the NICU until his due date of June 23. The family, who had planned to stay in Boston until James was healthy enough to fly home, is facing significant emotional and financial strain due to medical bills and the cost of their extended stay.
Despite the challenges, the Bonney family has been touched by the support from the Lehi community, including a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $12,000 of the $15,000 goal. Derek Bonney expressed gratitude for the community's kindness and support, stating, 'It's a big reminder of how blessed we are to live in the community we live in and be surrounded by friends and family and people who care about us.'
