State Senator Lincoln Fillmore stated that Salt Lake City remains in a leading position to secure a Major League Baseball expansion team, despite the timeline for such an announcement likely being set for 2028.
Fillmore, representing Salt Lake County, noted that while the city is about a calendar year closer to its goal, no significant steps forward have been made recently. He indicated that MLB is expected to complete a collective bargaining agreement in 2026 before announcing expansion plans in 2028.
Fillmore expressed high confidence in the pursuit of a team, stating his belief that no other city will be able to present a proposal comparable to what Big League Utah intends to submit.
The effort follows actions taken by the Utah Legislature last year, which established a Fairpark District on the west side. This initiative dedicated sales tax money and increases in car rental fees to raise nearly one billion dollars for stadium construction.
Officials associated with the Larry H. Miller Company, the entity that would own the expansion team, stated plans to invest $3.5 billion into a large-scale development project. According to Fillmore, this project is intended to encompass business, recreation, and entertainment.
