Mayor's Message

We’re off to a great start with the new recycling program. Only about 25% of households opted out, so a supermajority of our residents are participating.

That’s what we hoped and expected. Diverting waste from our shared regional landfill will help extend its life. I appreciate your patience through the rollout. Rallying the attention and action of thousands of people is quite a feat.

Waste has been a hot topic for the past year. Some residents have expressed hope the City would bring back the ability for residents to make dumpster reservations. That program served the community for more than 20 years before being discontinued in 2024 due to increasing operational costs, staffing demands, and equipment replacement needs. The program cost more than $50,000 in personnel hours and dump fees at the landfill.

I promised residents I would bring the topic before the new City Council to see where they stand. The Public Works director gave a presentation detailing the pros and cons. The council decided unanimously not to revive the program at this time. I recognize that will be disappointing for some of our residents.

The City is offering the following alternatives:

Four cleanup days per year for residents to drop off landfill items close to home.

Tree limb collection every Monday and Thursday, 1-3 pm.

Free landfill vouchers available at City Hall.

We hope neighbors will band together on cleanup days, share trucks and trailers, and help those with limited means.
