Strata Networks has become one of the first regional wireless carriers in the United States to complete the deployment of Rich Communication Services (RCS). The upgrade is designed to bring a significantly enhanced messaging experience to the company's wireless subscribers.
This implementation modernizes how text messages are sent and received. It aims to eliminate many frustrations associated with traditional text messaging, particularly when users communicate between Android and iPhone devices.
The RCS deployment offers several benefits for customers, including higher-quality photos and videos, more reliable group conversations, and improved messaging between Android and iPhone users. The technology also provides better delivery over cellular data or Wi-Fi, typing indicators, read receipts across device types, and enhanced security through encrypted conversations where supported.
For many years, text messaging has relied on technology developed in the early 1990s. While smartphones have evolved, the underlying SMS standard has remained largely unchanged, which often leads to limited functionality and compressed media. This upgrade replaces that aging technology with a faster and more reliable communication experience.
Bruce Todd, CEO and General Manager of Strata Networks, stated that people often do not consider the technology behind a text message until issues like blurry photos or broken group messages occur. He noted that this upgrade helps eliminate those frustrations while providing customers with a modern messaging experience.
The deployment also serves to reinforce the commitment of Strata to ensure rural communities have access to advanced wireless technologies available from the largest national carriers.
RCS is now available and enabled automatically for Strata customers using compatible Android devices and iPhones running iOS 26 or later.
