The Salt Lake City Council adopted a $2.1 billion budget for fiscal year 2026-27 on Tuesday, June 16, allocating approximately $498.2 million in the General Fund to support public safety, parks, and infrastructure.
Budget priorities and service commitments
Council Chair Alejandro "Ale" Puy said the budget reflects a commitment to protecting essential services and investing in neighborhoods despite limited resources. The spending plan, which takes effect July 1, includes increased funding for emergency response staffing to maintain rapid response times for high-rise developments and a growing population.
Tax increases and upcoming hearings
The Salt Lake City budget also prioritizes transit, housing stability, and justice court operations. However, the adoption process for property taxes will continue into August because the plan includes a $13.5 million proposed increase to address inflation and operational costs. The Council is scheduled to host a Truth in Taxation public hearing on August 11, 2026.
Vernal infrastructure project funding updates
In Vernal, the City Council met Wednesday to consider items regarding a water and sewer improvement project on 100 North and a transmission lining project on 3500 West. Following a June 4 authorization by the CIB Board, the city received a supplemental $265,000 loan and a $619,000 grant for these projects. This brings the total project funding to $4,518,000 in grants and $1,936,000 in loans.
Sewer project change order details
The Vernal City Council also reviewed a change order for the sewer project to address necessary work discovered after construction began, including the need for a manhole at the main line due to 6-inch sewer laterals.
Oremfest evaluation meeting scheduled
In Orem, the Events Advisory Commission has scheduled a meeting for July 9, 2026, to evaluate the recent Oremfest. The agenda includes reports on the festival's car show, business showcase, parade, and fireworks display.
