Salt Lake County Search and Rescue crews were dispatched to the Little Cottonwood Canyon area near China Wall on Friday after a hiker fell while navigating a boulder field, according to a October 10 report by Gephardt Daily.
The approximately 10-foot fall resulted in a serious lower leg injury that left the hiker unable to stand or return to the road on their own.
Search and Rescue was dispatched to the scene at approximately 3:26 p.m. Friday. The Unified Fire Authority arrived first to provide medical assistance and stabilize the patient's knee.
An initial SAR team arrived with a litter to assist the Unified Fire Authority in packaging the patient for extraction. A second team was sent to assess the terrain and plan an exit route, followed by two additional teams to support the carry-out operation.
SAR and Unified Fire Authority personnel worked together to carry the patient across the boulder field, down the trail, and through the creek until they reached the road. A family member was waiting at the road to transport the hiker to the hospital for further evaluation. All teams completed the operation and were off the mountain by 5:42 p.m.
