BYU running back LJ Martin is expected to be sidelined for at least a month following a lower-body injury, according to a report published October 7. The injury occurred during the Cougars' 17-10 road victory over TCU last week.
Martin sustained the injury during the first quarter of the game against TCU after being taken down awkwardly on a tackle. He exited the game after recording 16 rushing yards on two carries.
BYU coach Kalani Sitake stated on Monday that the team is still evaluating Martin's status and noted that the player appeared doubtful for Friday's game against Iowa State. Martin was already listed as out for that matchup in a player availability report released Tuesday.
Martin, the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year from last season, leads the BYU team with 344 rushing yards and ranks second in rushing touchdowns with three.
The injury comes ahead of BYU's upcoming schedule, which includes a home game against Iowa State on Friday, Oct. 9, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. The Cougars will also face No. 3 Notre Dame in Week 8.
