The planned closure of the eastbound I-80 to southbound I-215 ramp is part of ongoing infrastructure management by UDOT. The department confirmed that the work will impact travel between the two major interstates for a duration lasting up to 33 hours.
This specific ramp closure follows a period of significant activity on Salt Lake City interchanges. In recent months, UDOT has managed several high-profile disruptions, including a month-long closure of the I-215 off-ramp toward the Salt Lake International Airport and a vehicle fire that previously forced the closure of the eastbound I-80 to northbound I-15 ramp.
Pioneer Crossing Adjustments
Beyond the upcoming Monday night closure, UDOT has been addressing safety and traffic patterns through lane adjustments in other areas. Approximately two months ago, UDOT crews conducted nighttime roadwork on Pioneer Crossing to repaint and adjust lane markings.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation, these modifications along Pioneer Crossing were implemented specifically to address driver concerns regarding traffic patterns within that construction zone.
Recent Traffic Disruptions
The region has also dealt with recent emergency-related traffic disruptions. Roughly one month ago, a vehicle fire caused the closure of the eastbound I-80 to northbound I-15 ramp in Salt Lake City while crews worked at the scene.
Additionally, heavy delays were reported in South Salt Lake following a crash that shut down the I-80 to I-15 corridor. The Utah Department of Transportation officials noted at the time that the crash occurred in the northbound lanes.
Interstate Safety Record
The Salt Lake area has seen several significant incidents on the Interstate 215 corridor over the past few months. About two months ago, a wrong-way driver crash on I-215 resulted in two people being transported to the hospital after colliding with another vehicle.
These various incidents and planned maintenance projects, ranging from the 45-day airport off-ramp closure to the upcoming 33-hour ramp closure, represent a period of concentrated transportation management for state officials.
