Cooler air and lowering snow levels are moving into Utah's mountains as a low pressure system interacts with moisture from former-Hurricane Rachel, according to weather forecasts issued Oct. 12, 2026. While no new snow was reported at Utah ski resorts in the last 24 hours, meteorologists expect showers to continue through Wednesday with significant accumulation possible at several mountain locations.
Forecasted Snowfall Totals
Snowbird Ski And Summer Resort is expected to see the most significant upcoming snowfall, with 10 inches forecast over the next 72 hours, according to Snoflo. Sundance and Alta Ski Area are also projected to receive between 5.9 and 6 inches of new snow during that same period.
Current Snowpack Status
Current snowpack levels across the state remain thin. Snowbasin and Brian Head Resort both report a snowpack depth of 1 inch, while most other reporting areas show no snow on the ground. Brian Head Resort recorded the lowest temperature among reporting areas at 34 degrees Fahrenheit.
Previous Weather Patterns
The current weather pattern follows a period of heavy precipitation across the state. On Sept. 18, 2026, the National Weather Service Salt Lake City reported that many storms brought heavy rain, gusty winds, and hail, particularly affecting the northern portions of the forecast area.
Storm Development
The moisture surge from former-Hurricane Rachel has already produced impressive precipitation amounts across Utah. This moisture has now merged with a low pressure system to bring the cooler temperatures and snow showers currently affecting the mountain regions.
Looking Ahead
While many Utah resorts remain closed to skiing, the state's fall event season is currently in full swing, featuring various culinary, beer, and scenic festivals. Another storm system may be possible as early as next week, according to OpenSnow.
Seasonal Activities
Ski Utah reports that mountain biking, hiking, and various summer markets continue throughout the season. The official Ski Utah snow report remains available to track resort openings and conditions.
