The Cathedral of the Madeleine's Bishop's Dinner will feature the Most Rev. Gregory W. Gordon as the keynote speaker. The event's theme, Utah's Cathedral: Your Home, aims to explore how the Church community serves as a welcoming sanctuary for diverse groups.
Bishop Gordon serves as the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Las Vegas, where he acts as vicar general and moderator of the curia. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1988 and has served in various parish ministry roles in Las Vegas and at the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington, D.C. He was appointed a bishop by Pope Francis in 2021.
According to Kimberly Tosti, the cathedral's director of operations, the theme reflects a desire for the building to become a home for all. This includes welcoming individuals from parishes throughout the state and seeing the cathedral as the seat of Catholicism in Utah.
The dinner, which is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4, will include a video presentation highlighting personal stories from local community members, seminarians, and individuals receiving the sacraments. A cocktail hour featuring live music by the Maywood Ensemble string quartet will precede the event.
The event is a fundraiser intended to support the cathedral's physical maintenance, such as roof repairs, as well as its pastoral and outreach ministries. Tosti stated the scope has expanded to include the Good Samaritan program, sacraments, and concerts.
Organizers are working to engage young adults through special pricing and involvement in planning. The event will be held at the Grand America Hotel, located at 555 S. Main St. in Salt Lake City. Tickets are $300 per seat, with a $200 rate for young adults aged 35 and under.
