SUU Hosts East Elementary for Unique Campus Experience

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah University (SUU) recently concluded a week of community partnership as it welcomed nearly 500 students from East Elementary to campus. The collaboration began on May 11, providing a creative solution for the Iron County School District as construction crews prepare the elementary school's new building for its August opening.
Throughout the week, SUU pivoted to transform portions of its campus into a vibrant learning environment for the visiting children. The partnership offered elementary students a unique look at higher education, blending their standard curriculum with the specialized resources of a university setting.
To make their time on campus truly memorable, SUU faculty, staff, and students curated a variety of hands-on activities, including:
Scientific Exploration: Students participated in an Animal Ambassador assembly and explored regional biology at the Frehner Museum.
Creative Arts: The week included tours of the Utah Shakespeare Festival, puppet shows, and interactive sessions of songs, chants, and rhymes.
Literacy and Mentorship: Students enjoyed storytime and crafts at the university library, while elementary education practicum students provided direct support and guidance.
Active Engagement: Campus life was brought to the forefront through field day activities and meaningful interactions with SUU student-athletes.
Hands-on Academics: Fifth-grade students participated in a specialized crime scene activity hosted by the SUU Criminal Justice department, offering a practical look at career-focused learning.
The week culminated in a symbolic "graduation" walk. Donning complimentary SUU shirts and backpacks, the elementary students marched through the Carter Carillon Bell Tower. The tradition mirrors the walk SUU graduates take when they complete their degrees, symbolizing the upward momentum and future potential of every student involved.
The collaboration relied on enhanced security protocols to ensure a safe environment for all participants.
