President Dallin H. Oaks reaffirmed distinctive doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026, during the 196th Semiannual General Conference, emphasizing the belief that all people are children of God. In his concluding address, Oaks also announced that the Salt Lake Temple will open to the public for six months starting April 5, 2027, marking the first such opening since 1893.
Distinctive Doctrines and Identity
Oaks addressed the fundamental identity of believers, noting that while many Christian traditions teach that individuals only become God's spiritual children by accepting Jesus Christ, Latter-day Saints hold that all mortals are beloved children of God. This teaching was corroborated by other leaders during the conference sessions.
Primary General President Rosemary K. Chibota stated on Sunday that identity is not something achieved, but something inherited as children of God. She noted that this belief influences how members view themselves and how they treat others, urging disciples to pray to see others as God sees them. Similarly, Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles told the congregation that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ know and love every individual personally.
