Multiple roads were closed in San Kuancy as fire crews worked to contain the Babylon and Horse Head fires burning in southeastern Utah. The San Juan County Sheriff's Office closed the roads on Sunday to provide fire crews with better access for fire suppression efforts.
Officials stated that these closures were necessary to ensure firefighters had safe access to the fire area and to allow emergency equipment to move efficiently. Authorities also requested that people do not attempt to bypass barricades or travel on these roads, noting that keeping routes clear was essential for protecting lives and supporting suppression efforts.
The impacted road closures included Causeway Road, Bridger Jack Road off Highway 211, and the junction of Kigalia and North Elk Ridge toward Big Notch.
At the time of the latest update, officials reported that the Babylon Fire had burned more than 300 acres, while the Horse Head Fire had burned over 200 acres. Because the Horse Head Fire threatened structures, officials instructed everyone north of Gooseberry Guard Station to evacuate to safety.
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for southeastern Utah, including northern San Juan County, until 10 p.m. Sunday because of strong winds. The alert described the situation as particularly dangerous.
NWS officials noted that several large wildfires developed across the region and showed extreme behavior. They stated that atmospheric conditions were on track to remain similar, making rapid wildfire spread possible. Residents were recommended to have an emergency supply kit available and to create an evacuation plan.
