Broad Fire Causes Highway 84 Closure Near Weber Canyon

The Broad Fire was actively burning above Highway 84 near the western mouth of Weber Canyon, according to a September 5 statement from Utah Fire Info.

Highway 84 was closed in both directions due to continued fire behavior and aircraft flying over the road. Officials advised travelers to find alternate routes and avoid the junction of Highway 84 and Highway 89 to minimize potential secondary incidents from traffic backups.

The fire was burning mostly north/northeast on the north slope above Highway 84. Aircraft and crews had been successful in keeping the fire on the east side of the U slope and away from Uintah.

On the south side of Highway 84, crews were making progress and had stopped forward progression on the Davis County side. While there were no official evacuations in place or immediate threats to communities, residents were advised to stay near phones for alerts or notices.

Fire managers noted that members of the public had been seen hiking into the fire area and riding dirt bikes on trails toward the fire. Officials reminded the public that the active fire endangers both civilian lives and the lives of firefighters, requesting that people stay off trails, roads, and out of the air.
