Governor Spencer J. Faris Cox announced Tuesday the appointments of Jay T. Jorgensen and Stephen P. Dent to the Utah Supreme Court, filling two new seats created by legislation passed during the 2026 Legislative Session.
Purpose of Court Expansion
The expansion of the court from five to seven justices aims to support the judiciary and ensure timely reviews of cases with statewide importance, according to a press release from Governor Cox. The governor selected both appointees following a review process conducted by the Appellate Court Nominating Commission.
Background on Jay T. Jorgensen
Jorgensen, who currently serves as senior counsel in the Office of General Counsel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, previously held executive roles at Coupang, Inc. and Walmart. He also served as a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist and Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr.

Dent currently serves as deputy criminal chief and Southern Utah branch chief in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah. A graduate of the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, Dent previously practiced at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP.
Senate Confirmation Process Details
The Utah Senate Judicial Confirmation Committee is now seeking public comment on both nominees. The committee plans to hold a public hearing and issue a recommendation to the full Senate, which must provide advice and consent for the appointments under the Utah Constitution.
