Scott Wayne Nichols, a 64-year-old veteran and longtime resident of Carbon County, passed away on July 14, 2026, following a courageous two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer, according to an obituary published by Mitchell Funeral Home.
Military service and professional career
Born on May 21, 1962, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Nichols was the son of Mark and Lois Winn. After graduating from Carbon High School as part of the class of 1980, he entered military service by enlisting in the United States Air Force.
Nichols served in the Air Force from 1980 to 1984. Following his honorable discharge, he pursued further education, earning an associate degree in communications. This training led to a 35-year career working with fiber optics, during which time he lived and worked in both Humble, Texas, and Auburn, Washington.
Return to Carbon County
After retiring from his career in communications technology, Nichols returned to Carbon County in 2021. The move was intended to bring him closer to his family members residing in the area.
In addition to his professional life, Nichols was known for several personal interests and hobbies. He was described as an excellent golfer and pool player. He also possessed a highly competitive nature during card games with friends and family, often noted for his ability to challenge any opponent.
Family and survivors
Nichols was married to Elizabeth Bennett on August 11, 1991, in Houston, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Liz Nichols, of Price.
His surviving family members include several siblings: Nick Nichols of California; Gayle Pierucci of New Mexico; Penny Nichols of Price; Kelly Christensen of West Point; Ralph Winn of Price; Suzy Tweddell of Billings, Montana; and Vikki Madsen of Wellington. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
Funeral and interment details
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Mitchell Funeral Home of Price and Huntington. A visitation was scheduled for the evening of July 16, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home located at 233 East Main Street in Price.
The funeral service is set to take place on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the same location, with interment to follow at Cliffview Cemetery in Price.
