An overdue hiker was rushed to a local hospital after being found by search and rescue teams in Kane County on Monday, July 6, 2026. The individual was discovered nonverbal and drifting in and out of consciousness.
The incident began when a group of hikers traveling to The Wave, a popular sandstone formation, realized one member had become separated from the group. After returning to the trailhead and finding the hiker missing, the group contacted authorities.
The Kane County Sheriff's Office stated that the rescue took place around 3 p.m. on Monday. Search efforts continued throughout the evening and night with assistance from helicopters from Intermountain Life Flight and the Utah Department of Public Safety.
Ground teams eventually located tracks leading toward the Buckskin Gulch Trailhead. The hiker was found lying on slickrock above the slot canyon and was subsequently flown to a local area hospital for treatment of dehydration and other injuries.
The Kane County Sheriff's Office issued a statement noting that the outcome could have been different. The agency used the incident to remind hikers to stay with their groups, carry enough water, and prepare for extreme desert conditions.
