The South Salt Lake City Council approved a zoning amendment and an updated storm drainage master plan during a regular meeting on August 26, 2026, according to a meeting record.
During the session, Council members voted to change the zoning for a property at 116 E Garden Ave from a commercial corridor to an R-1 single-family residential district. City Planner Jed Shum stated the change would provide the owner with more financial flexibility by allowing potential buyers to secure loans.
The council also voted to adopt an updated South Salt Lake Storm Drainage Master Plan. Capital Improvements Manager Corby Talbot and Stormwater Division Supervisor Micah Semon were present to answer questions regarding the plan before the final vote.
In other business, Mayor Wood reminded residents to observe school zones and stop for school buses to ensure child safety. The Mayor noted that all after-school programs have successfully begun and are currently full with waiting lists. Council Chair Sharla Bynum expressed appreciation for the city's funding of the Promise South Salt Lake after-school programs.
Mayor Wood also announced a community gathering hosted by the Promise South Salt Lake Prevention Committee at the City Co-op to honor loved ones for International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31. Additionally, the Mayor reminded the public that the 988 crisis line is available 24 hours a day.
The meeting, which was presided over by Council Chair Sharla Bynum, adjourned at 7:16 p.m. The next Council Meeting was scheduled for September 9 at 7 p.m.
