A hard closure of 700 West from the bridge to State Street is underway in Hurricane City, a development that officials say is necessary to complete construction projects before the upcoming school year.
Details of Road Closure
In a June 1 update from Mayor Fawcett, the City of Hurricane announced that while crews have attempted to keep the roadway open during progress, maintaining access has become increasingly difficult. The closure is expected to last approximately six to eight weeks.
Detour Information and Sunday Access
City officials stated that detour routes have been posted and requested that motorists follow them to ensure the safety of both workers and drivers. To assist local residents, the city will attempt to reopen the road on Sundays to provide access to the local chapel.
Drainage Fee Public Hearing
In a separate update dated June 8, Mayor Fawcett announced a public hearing scheduled for June 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the Fine Arts Center. The hearing will address a proposed increase in the city's monthly drainage fee from $4 to $11.
Reasons for Proposed Fee Increase
The Mayor noted that the current drainage system has lacked necessary improvements for many years and that city growth, along with new MS4 storm water regulations from the Utah Division of Water Quality, has increased infrastructure responsibilities and costs.
