Utah and BYU student-athletes are earning significant conference recognition and national attention as Big 12 programs continue to establish themselves following their inaugural seasons in the league.
Bear Bachmeier's National Recognition
BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier has been selected for the West Coast cover of the Athlon Sports 2026 College Football Preview. As KSL reported, the Murrieta, California native earned Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year honors after passing for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns while rushing for 527 yards and 11 scores during his debut season.
Utah Baseball Postseason Honors
In baseball, the Big 12 announced postseason honors Tuesday that included four Utah players. According to KSL reporting, outfielder Jake Long was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team after hitting .380 during conference play with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs. Freshman infielder Cal Miller earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team, while Jet Gilliam and Cameron Gurney both received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors.
Utah Baseball Tournament Outlook
Utah baseball enters the Big 12 Tournament as the No. 10 seed, scheduled to face No. 11 Kansas State on Tuesday in Surprise, Arizona. Head coach Gary Henderson noted that the team has shown growth and improved its bullpen throughout a season that included a 12-18 conference record.
New Offensive Coordinator Arrival
The University of Utah is also preparing for an offensive transition under new coordinator Kevin McGiven. The Daily Utah Chronicle noted that McGiven’s arrival mirrors the successful path of former coordinator Jason Beck, who led the Utes to an 11-2 record and a Las Vegas Bowl victory in 2025.
Focus on Upcoming Milestones
While BYU baseball's Miller Park recently gained attention from MLB for its scenic views of the Wasatch Mountains, both Utah and BYU programs continue to focus on upcoming postseason and seasonal milestones in their new conference.
