A condition known as Dupuytren's disease may be the cause for individuals experiencing difficulty straightening their fingers or noticing lumps in the palm of the hand. While common, many people remain unaware of the condition.
Prevalence and demographics
Shaun Mendenhall, MD, section head of hand surgery in the Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at University of Utah Health, stated that approximately 5% of people in the United States will experience some element of Dupuytren's disease at some point and noted it could affect individuals of almost any age.
Physical progression of tissue
The disease involves thickened tissue forming beneath the skin of the palm. Over time, this tissue can tighten and pull one or more fingers into a bent position, making it difficult or impossible to fully straighten them.
Genetic factors and risk
Genetics play a significant role in development, with the condition being most common in men of Northern European ancestry, often appearing between ages 40 and 60. Progression varies; some individuals may only develop a small nodule that never progresses, while others may experience rapid progression that becomes debilitating within a short period.
Identifying early symptoms
Early signs can include small lumps or bumps in the palm, pits or dimples at the base of the ring and small fingers, and thickened cords of tissue beneath the skin. These changes occur when fibrous tissue grows abnormally and contracts, forming rope-like cords that pull fingers toward the palm.
Impact on daily activities
Advanced stages of the condition can impact daily functionality, making it difficult to perform tasks such as putting a hand in a pocket or a glove, gripping a soda can, or even washing one's face.
Modern treatment and procedures
Treatment options have evolved beyond traditional surgery. Dr. Mendenhall described an injectable medication that breaks up collagen to rupture cords and enable straight fingers as one of the biggest medical advancements for the condition since its description in 1834. Other options include a minimally invasive procedure using a needle to break apart tissue, or surgery to remove abnormal tissue through an incision.
While patients often do well after surgery, Dr. Mendenhall noted it is a significant procedure requiring splinting and hand therapy afterward.
The primary goal of treatment is to prevent worsening deformity and maintain hand function. Dr. Mendenhall advised that individuals noticing lumps, pits, or tightness in their palm should make an appointment with a hand specialist for evaluation to determine the severity of the situation and work toward restoring hand function.
