The Utah State Board of Education announced a new statewide partnership to bring Google’s Gemini for Education into public schools starting next school year, targeting roughly 680,000 students and 28,000 educators.
AI integration goals
As KSLTV reported, the rollout intends to integrate artificial intelligence into classroom instruction and student learning within a controlled, school-managed environment. The tools are designed to assist teachers with building lesson plans, creating materials, and streamlining instructional tasks.
Prioritizing student data security
Matthew Winters, an artificial intelligence education specialist with the Utah State Board of Education, said protecting student information remains a primary focus during the implementation.
“We want to make sure the tools that are available to students have the best safety and security for their data to protect them as students,” Winters said.
Promoting AI literacy and machine learning
State leaders are also focusing on AI literacy, which involves teaching students about generative AI systems like Gemini and ChatGPT, as well as broader concepts like machine learning.
Winters noted that machine learning already influences various real-world processes, such as job applications and insurance services, making fluency in these technologies a powerful tool for both educational and consumer use.
