SALT LAKE CITY — Summer travel is back on. Whether you are hitting the skies or the freeway, finding travel snacks usually means staring down a wall of sugar and salt.

KSL Healthy Contributor Miki Eberhardt admits healthy snacking takes a little more planning, but it doesn’t have to be hard. Eberhardt shared her 6 go-to strategies for healthy snacking.

Eberhardt has 6 healthy snacks everyone can take that are airport and car friendly. Eberhardt says the trickiest part of finding healthy snacks is getting enough protein and produce. While these things can be found at an airport or gas station, most of the time the prices can be expensive.

“It takes a little bit of planning, but you will for sure save a lot of money,” Eberhardt said.

Some of the snacks she included for healthy travel are:

Cardboard Charcuterie

The cardboard charcuterie idea

Half of a cardboard egg carton. Deli meat, cheese, frozen grapes, buts, crackers. Eberhardt says this snack will make the people sitting next to you jealous.

Airport Bagged Salad

Pre-packaged bagged salads

These to-go salads can be found at a grocery store. Eberhardt says the dressing is less than 3.5 ounces and will go through TSA. She recommends adding some extra protein to the salad.

Frozen Yogurt Pouches

Using frozen yogurt pouches

Eberhardt says freezing frozen yogurt pouches not only have extra protein, but it can also keep other food cold as well. The frozen pouches are also TSA friendly.

“That's 10 grams of protein just to pop in your mouth,” Eberhardt said.

Dunkable Cups

The dunkable cups are individual hummus, cottage cheese, or guacamole cups that are sold at grocery stores. Eberhardt recommended bringing roasted edamame, vegetables and crackers to dip in the cups.

Protein Pairings

Quick protein pairing options

For protein, Eberhardt recommends dipping apples in peanut butter, or a beef stick. Easy to grab-and-go is the mindset while creating these snacks.

Eberhardt said: “If you pack them and take them you will eat them. You're much better off with more nutritious things on that travel, than your typical airport stuff.”

Cutie Mandarin Oranges

Eberhardt said to always have an orange on hand, and to visit her Instagram for more information
