University of Utah senior leadership announced that HB 261, titled Equal Opportunity Initiatives, became state law on July 1. The university stated it would follow the new state law and work alongside Utah System of Higher Education leaders to implement the requirements of the legislation.
To understand the impact of the new law, the university launched a campus-wide review to identify which people, processes, and policies might be affected. Leaders planned to meet with various teams across the campus as part of a deliberate assessment process.
University officials noted that student centers would continue working with all students to support success under the law. Additionally, the legislation protects academic research, grants, and eligibility requirements established by accreditation bodies and federal programs.
The university stated that an FAQ would be published on @theU once the thorough review of the legislation was complete, a process expected to take several weeks. President Taylor Randall, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences Michael Good, and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Mitzi Montoya expressed commitment to maintaining a campus community where all students, faculty, and staff can thrive.
