Real Monarchs extended their losing streak to five games on Sunday, falling 4-1 at Colorado Rapids 2 at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park. The loss left the Monarchs with a 6-13-4 record and 26 points, placing them 11th in the West.
The match featured multiple Monarchs making their debuts for the team. Utah native Zach Liffert appeared as a substitute at halftime, playing 45 minutes in his first appearance with the squad. Hayden Sargis, on loan from Athletic Club Boise of USL One, also made his first Monarchs appearance as a substitute in the 60th minute. RSL Academy star Kellen Poll made his professional debut in Colorado, subbing on in the 84th minute.
Colorado took a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute when Chris Aquino scored on a counter attack with a left-footed strike. Josh Copeland doubled the lead for the home side in the 52nd minute following a solo effort. In the 67th minute, Hamdoin Altayeb crossed the ball to Jonathan De La Fuente, who scored a curling shot to make it 3-0.
Real Monarchs scored their first goal in 391 minutes of game time in the 90+2nd minute when Linkon Ream redirected a cross from Felix Ewald into the net. However, Colorado responded two minutes later with a goal from Sydney Wathuta to secure the 4-1 victory.
Following four road games, the Real Monarchs were scheduled to return home on Saturday, August 30, to face Tacoma Defiance at Zions Bank Stadium with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m. MT.
