The Widemouth 2 Fire has destroyed its first known structure, a cabin belonging to Gary and Liz Smith. The structure was lost around 5:40 PM on August 3, 2026, as the fire moved through the area.
According to Matthew Johnson, the Smith cabin was in the final stages of completion and tree perimeter clearing when the fire arrived. Due to evacuation orders issued last week, the owners were unable to finish clearing trees from the perimeter. However, the Smiths were able to retrieve valuables and escape down the mountain safely before the fire closed in.
The fire moved rapidly through the area, consuming junipers. Firefighters reportedly described the junipers as little green gas cans because their leaves, twigs, and sap contain high concentrations of volatile oils, resins, and waxes that ignite rapidly.
The Widemouth 2 Fire was mapped at 84,229 acres as of 2:14 PM on August 4, 2026. A more thorough assessment of lost structures and the affected area is expected in the coming days.
