Utah State soccer secured its most dominant victory over a ranked opponent in program history on Thursday night, defeating No. 13 BYU 4-0 at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field. According to a September 10 report, the victory in front of a record crowd of 3,181 fans marks the Aggies' second-highest ranked win.
The Aggies established control early when sophomore defender Summer Sofonia scored her first career goal in the 10th minute following a corner kick. The scoring continued three minutes into the second half when Summer Diamond chipped a shot past the keeper to extend the lead to 2-0.
In the 68th minute, senior forward Samantha Sellers scored from 15 yards out following a takeaway by Austin Miller. Victoria Espinoza added the final goal in the 88th minute on a corner kick to complete the shutout. Sophomore goalkeeper Ivy Nystrom recorded two saves during the match.
The win brings Utah State to a 5-2-1 record and completes a sweep of in-state opponents, having gone 4-0 against Beehive State foes. The Aggies have now been 4-2-2 against BYU during the Manny Martins era since 2021.
Utah State is scheduled to host South Dakota State on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
