The Bonneville Fire has reached 84% containment after burning approximately 566 acres in steep terrain near the University of Utah, according to a June 24 report from the WildFire Explorer. The fire, which ignited on the evening of June 21, is no longer considered an immediate threat to nearby structures.
Fire Containment and Spread
The fire began around 5:55 p.m. on June 21 near 1950 E. Circle of Hope Drive, positioned just north of the University of Utah Hospital and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. According to the WildFire Explorer, the blaze was caused by human activity and initially spread rapidly through dry grass, brush, and oak, eventually reaching Mount Van Cott.
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall expressed gratitude for the Salt Lake City Fire Department and multiple responding agencies during a June 20 post regarding the fire's progression. While the Mayor noted that no mandatory evacuations were in place at that time, she emphasized that officials would continue to monitor conditions throughout the night.
Containment Efforts and Infrastructure
A unified command involving the Salt Lake City Fire Department, Utah Forestry, Fire and State Lands, the U.S. Forest Service, and University Police has successfully established a fire break around the entire perimeter. Firefighters are currently focused on cooling remaining heat sources and strengthening fire lines.
Despite the proximity to major medical facilities, no structures have been damaged or destroyed. Protection crews successfully defended the University of Utah campus and nearby medical centers during the initial stages of the fire.
Closures and Public Safety
While major roads remain open, authorities have requested that the public avoid the area near Red Butte Canyon Road and Tomahawk Drive to prevent impeding firefighter traffic. Several local trails, including the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, City Creek Trail, Dry Creek Trail, and Red Butte Trail, remain strictly closed due to internal hot spots.
A Temporary Flight Restriction is also in effect over the fire area, making the use of drones strictly prohibited by law enforcement.
Environmental Impact and Weather
The fire's rapid initial growth was attributed to tinder-dry conditions resulting from a drought emergency declared earlier this year. Extreme climate factors, including a warm winter and record-low snowpack, caused vegetation to dry out earlier than usual.
Although the University of Utah remains open, smoke from the blaze has settled into the Salt Lake Valley, impacting air quality. Residents with respiratory conditions have been advised by officials to stay indoors.
Current Status
No injuries or fatalities among civilians or firefighters have been reported. While the Arlington Hills neighborhood 'READY' status was lifted on June 22, and an initial shelter-in-place order for University of Utah students was also lifted, officials warn that internal pockets of heat remain a danger.
