Alpine Mayor Carla Merrill proclaimed Sept. 17 through Sept. 23 as Constitution Week, the city announced Wednesday, Sept. 16, on its official social media account. The proclamation encourages residents to study and reflect on the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.
The observance was made in partnership with the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Additionally, Thursday, Sept. 17, is observed nationally as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.
Constitution Week dates to 1956, following a congressional resolution signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower after a year of petitioning by the DAR. The observance commemorates the anniversary of the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.
